“Coming Up Roses” Cup & Saucer

February 12, 2013

Valentine’s Day is just two days away, but it’s not too late to celebrate with the one you love at All Fired Up. Simply call any one of our three locations (Carytown, Midlothian, or Short Pump) to make a reservation, and then get ready for some quality time with your sweetie!

Need an idea for something to work on? Why not try a cup and saucer set? You can each work on either the cup or saucer, and have one unique product when you’re finished! Or, better yet, make a His and Hers set!

ComingUpRosesCup&SaucerMaterials Needed:

  • Cup and Saucer bisque piece
  • Fine Brush
  • Pencil
  • Glaze Colors: Rosey, Kiwi, Black, True Blue

Instructions:

  1. Wipe down the piece with a damp sponge to make sure that no dust or dirt has settled on the piece.
  2. Paint large, slightly wiggly Rosey spots all over the outside of your cup and outer rim of the saucer, spreading them evenly around. Once dry, paint over them a second time. (Tip: For best results, pick a center point and then paint in a spiral shape outward until you are happy with the size.)
  3. Paint either one or two Kiwi-shaped ovals of color (in the general shape of a leaf) beside each Rose. If desired, you could also use finger prints instead of a paint brush for a special touch.
  4. Fill in empty space by stamping the eraser of your pencil in True Blue glaze and dotting it all around your Rosey and Kiwi splotches (do not overlap).
  5. Pour out a small amount of black glaze on your tile and mix with an even smaller amount of water (about a 6:1 ratio of paint:water). Mix together. Using a small/fine brush, start from the center of your pink splotch and paint in a (very wiggly) spiral outward to mimic petals. (Tip: practice this “wiggly spiral” on your table with a pencil until you get the hang of it.)
  6. Continue to paint the leaves in the same loose, wiggly fashion. See picture above for guidance. (One more tip: It doesn’t have to be perfect! Just get the general idea of rose petals and leaves. The more abstract, the more artistic people will think you are!)
  7. Write your name or initials on the back of your piece with a paintbrush or paint pen. (Please note: Pen or pencil will not show up after the firing process.)
