Salt-Dough Ornaments & More

November 27, 2012

Get the kids together for this simple, fun Christmas craft!

Simply mix one cup salt, one cup water, and two cups of flour in a bowl and blend together until dough-like. Sprinkle flour on your countertop and knead the dough, slowly adding more flour until it feels smooth and elastic and is no longer tacky. Flatten the dough with a rolling pin and use cookie cutters to create shapes – you can even use stamps to add designs and textures, or get a print of your little one’s hand to commemorate their first Christmas. Use a straw to poke out a hole at the top of each ornament for them to hang by. Place them on a cookie sheet and bake them at 200 degrees for 4-6 hours to get rid of any excess moisture. Once hardened, you and the kids can decorate them with markers, paint, glitter, or watercolors. Lastly, you’ll want to coat them with 3 thin layers of polyurethane gloss so they will last for many more years! Let them dry, and they’ll be ready to hang on your tree!

Here are even more creative ornament ideas for the Holidays:

Use the salt dough tutorial, but instead of cutting different shapes just cut circles and use letter stamps to write Christmas-themed words (such as joy, love, peace, believe, hope).

Get a print of your child’s hand, turn it upside down, and transform it into an adorable Santa ornament! (Even better, come to All Fired Up on December 4th and make their handprint out of wet clay! Find out more information about our Handprint Ornament Class here.)

Create these amazing, three-dimensional ornaments that will sparkle and shine on your tree or in your window all winter long. Come to our Adult Technique Class: Glass Icicles on December 13th from 6-8pm to learn how to make these amazing works of art.
