How To Tuesday: “Turkey Day” Plate

November 20, 2012

Thanksgiving is just a few days away! But it’s never too late to commemorate those little hands and create a keepsake that will always help you remember how small they were this Thanksgiving! You can pull this keepsake out for many Thanksgivings to come.

Materials:

  • Large Rimmed Dinner Plate
  • Brush
  • Sponge
  • Paint Pens:
      • Earth
      • Black
      • Marigold
      • Scarlet
  • Glaze Colors:
      • Tang
      • Earth
      • Scarlet
      • Marigold
      • Caramel

Instructions:

  1. Wipe down the piece with a damp sponge to make sure that no dust or dirt has settled on the piece.
  2. Paint your child’s hand thickly with Tang glaze, have them hold their hand as open as possible, and press firmly onto the center of the plate. Wiggle each finger and palm down gently to insure a good print.
  3. After wiping off their hand with a damp sponge, paint their entire thumb with Earth glaze, and print it firmly onto the bottom center of the handprint (see picture above).
  4. Paint your child’s fingers and print them in different colors (Tang, Marigold, Caramel, and Scarlet) all around the rim of the plate.
  5. Use the Earth paint pen to turn the fingerprints into variously shaped leaves, some with stems and/or veins, some without. Also add the inscription “Our Little Turkey” and “Happy Thanksgiving” and the year. (Feel free to change it however you like, such as adding your child’s name.)
  6. Add the details of the turkey – Use a Black paint pen for his pilgrim’s hat and eyes, Marigold for his beak, and Scarlet for the band on his hat and his “snood” (the fleshy part under his beak).
  7. Write your name or initials on the bottom of your piece with a paintbrush or paint pen. (Please note: Pen or pencil will not show up after the firing process.)
